Eric is a selfish man who likes to come back to his exes for sex and money, but he does not pursue them as hard as he pursues new girls. Miriam, a student of psychology, becomes an exception to his rules. Three years after their break-up, the woman he thought he knew all too well to be impressed with suddenly claims to be able to guide people into a magical 4D porn experience.
Eric is trying to earn his place in Miriam’s privileged circle, but the girl who purports to be a therapist like no other is remarkably unstable herself. Eric suspects that she may have a different agenda than to entertain him, but the promise of a new form of sexual bliss seems worth the risk.
Does she want him back? Does she want to cure him? Does she want her revenge? It’s not clear what Miriam truly wants, but her wishes do not matter to Eric as long as he gets what he wants. But his own goals change, too, as the time goes on.
Miriam volunteers to be Eric’s guide in his psychedelic experience, but she also unintentionally becomes his teacher. He wants to learn to guide and fix others before he is fixed.

I’m always curious what makes a narcissist tick, so when I saw this book, the title intrigued me. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. The main character is a man called Eric, and although he is a totally self-centred and selfish narcissist, he is extremely funny. Miriam, his girlfriend, who is studying psychology, doesn’t intend putting up with Eric’s unfaithfulness. She wants him to be true to only her. Eric is besotted with the beautiful Miriam, but although she is his favourite girlfriend, he has no intention of being faithful to her. He intends still seeing other women, but mostly to use them for money or sex. Although he tells Miriam he loves her, she figures he’s just a narcissistic womanizer and gives him an ultimatum to ditch the other girls or lose her. Eric is so egotistical he thinks he can keep some of his girlfriends and still have sweet, innocent Miriam. But Miriam isn’t as naive or sweet as he thinks. She wants him to fall in love with only her, and to punish him she finds another boyfriend. She also plans to use Eric as a guinea pig by experimenting on him with the power of a drug called Kratom in the hope of curing him of his narcissistic and selfish ways. She tempts him by promising the best mind blowing experience he could ever have if he takes her potion. The way this story is told had me laughing all the way through. Eric is a rat bag, but funny with a boyish charm and Miriam is also funny. To find out if what Miriam does to Eric works, you’ll have to read the book. As per the first book I read by Katerina, "Hawaiian Lei of Shrunken Heads" (5 stars), I needed some time after "Psychedelic Cure of a Narcissist Power of Kratom" to feel I could write a fair review. The storyline is enthralling and took me, as before, far into the character's self - making aloof while-I-read observations difficult.
Deep point of view immersion occured quickly, and I remained in the main character's head for a long time, until the narrative broke into almost continous dialog. It wasn't until I had finished the book, and dialog and deep point of view continued to merge, that I saw the protagonist's problem was encapsulated into the author's narrative technique.
So, though very complex, the good news is I was almost immediately drawn into wondering about the character, rooting for him at times, hooting his choices at others. The even better new is, there's room for a whole 'nother level of development, based on the somewhat surprising yet totally believeable ending.
The author will, I believe, have a unique challenge drawing this character's development into the apparently self aware narrator self-telling his own story in first person deep narrative. One I look very much forward to reading (smiles).
Here's the thing about Psychedelic Cure, it's not the book you really ever expect it to be, but it takes you in fascinating directions. It tackles some big issues including the relationships between men and women, discusses the idea of control in a relationship, and looks at the beneficence of chemical use for fun and profit. Much like the philosophers of yore before her (no great surprise since she has a Master's in Philosophy), Novotna examines the issues through dialog between her characters. The story is, of course, important, but the sparkling elements of it are the underlying philosophical engagements with Miriam playing the role of being free as Eric plays the role of being a slave to his own desires.
I won't go so far as to say it's an easy book to read, not that it's technically difficult, you just feel like you need a shower after being in Eric's head for a spell, but it's an excellent book to read and the ending is worth every word in the rest of the book. Don't look for anything in your face (that's my realm), Novotna plays things cooler and after reading Psychedelic Cure, you'll find yourself going back and chewing on parts of it. That bit of subtlety is hard to pull off and makes this one of those books that you never really put down.
Psychedelic Cure of a Narcissist Power of Kratom and Opiates is the second book that I have read from Author Katerina Seskatnova Novotna, an excellent writer, and storyteller.
The main character, Eric, narrated the story.
It started with the love affair of Eric, a businessperson, and psychology student Miriam, but then the story intensified into Eric’s multiple exploits with other women.
Eric felt that “he was God’s gift to women.” He was a narcissist.
Miriam wanted revenge because Eric hurt her.
She began a new relationship with Eric’s best friend, Peter, who was known to be gay.
She also started a Master’s Degree and wanted to practice what she learned.
Peter revealed to Eric his ecstatic visions of leis of men, with Miriam as his therapist.
That made Eric jealous, and he wanted Miriam back in his life.
Miriam boasted to Eric about her therapeutic skills, psychedelic cures, potions for alcoholics and narcissists, other addiction cleansing techniques, and much more.
Eric was willing to be Miriam’s guinea pig in her therapeutic experiments but he had ideas of his own, which caused a severe tragedy.
Did Eric benefit from Miriam’s therapy?
In a strange twist of fate, he became a changed man.
This psychological thriller was jaw dropping, and it revealed many things that I never knew before or read in any other book.
It is definitely for adults only.
